Ethnography Film Review: Voices From the Village—Theatre Troupe on the Road
Abstract
The ethnographic film Voices from the Village: Theatre Troupe on the Road is a 53-minute audiovisualethnomusicologytext. Directed by Chen Xulong, an independent scholar from Gansu Province, it was filmed over three years (2020–2023) to document the itinerant livelihood of multiple shadow theatre troupes in the Longzhong region of Gansu, China.
Framing shadow theatre music as a sonic practice embedded in local belief systems, the film reveals the interplay between musical behavior and the ethical order of agrarian society through oral narratives from Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) inheritors at different administrative levels. Its narrative design is grounded in the core content and cultural connotations of shadow theatre: centeringonfour key themes of theatre owner, theatre routes, inheritance, and perseverance, it constructs a six-dimensional audiovisual narrative model divided into six sections, namely theatre owner, theatre troupe, folk customs, performance, theatre routes, and inheritance. The film adopts desaturated black-and-white footage to distinguish the profane everyday space from the sacred ritual space. Employing audiovisual techniques including audio dissolve and sound-image parallel montage, it takes cross-troupe renditions of the traditional play Sitting in the State of Yue as its implicit narrative thread, highlighting the folk attribute of "entertaining both deities and humans" and the edifying function of shadow theatre. Furthermore, the film forms significant intertextuality with thedirectorscontemporaneous academic works. Awarded the Silver Prize (First Runner-Up) at the 3rd CMEFF Chinese Music Ethnography Biennial and accessioned into the permanent collection of the Chinese Ethnographic Museum, this work stands as a pivotal audiovisual text for academic research on Chinese shadow theatre ICH and the anthropology of art.
