INTRODUCTION:
The musical bow is an instrument often being placed at the beginning of instrumental developments, yet it is not proven that this is the case. The musical bow may have been just one of many musical instruments that were used to create sound with specific features. The descriptions of musical bows found so far are pointing towards cultures in Africa, yet there are plenty of musical bows found across Asia, of which is not much known to the world such as the many deriving musical instruments found in current practice such as plucked idiophones (all types of jaw’s harps) and still as musical bows of different shapes with and without resonators. Zithers that come next to mind such as the Thai phin phia or the Vietnamese dan bau, many multiple string goongs (tube zithers) of the highland communities of mainland Southeast Asia or the various boat shaped lutes that are principally related to zithers as well as all the many zithers of the Middle East and Europe, harps and lyres that may are derivates of them in Egypt and other places respectively such as the Chinese kam, not to forget the sophisticatedly hammered zithers of the santur/yangqin type, are seemingly the other end of a long development.
The papers collected in this volume have been initially presented at the International Council for Traditional Music Colloquium (ICTMD) held in Shanghai in December 2022. They try to challenge some previous depictions of instrumental development and one-sided explanations of musical histories. They specifically focus on exploring the interrelationship between instrumental development and the availability of natural resources in particular geographical regions. While the papers at the colloquium focused on sound production, they also explored the role of ethnomusicology as a discipline in guiding local decision making and interregional research co-operation.

INTRODUCTION:
Double-reed instruments have been under-represented in ethnomusicology and related fields and deserve much more serious and sustained attention. To fill the void in current scholarship, the 25th Colloquium of the International Council for Traditional Music, Double Reeds along the Great Silk Road: The Interaction of Theory and Practice from Antiquity to Contemporary Performance, was held at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, China, in 2018. With a selection of papers from the colloquium, the present volume gathers and analyzes existing documents, whether written, historical, or ethnographical, and provides information on previously neglected regions.

INTRODUCTION:
This volume comprises fifteen selected papers in five chapters from the 27th ICTMD Colloquium on Drums and Drum Ensembles along the Great Silk Road. It testifies to how human cultures are never created in seclusion. The richness of drums and drum ensembles, including their repertoires, are also connected to long-term exchanges in military affairs, trades, and religions of various peoples.
Despite the obvious prevalence of drums among all peoples around the world, their understanding and their repertoires vary due to different contexts. The studies of music originating on the Silk Road presented in this volume pay particular attention to the multiple flows of knowledge between numerous distinctive regions in the narrower geographical and temporal scope.
