The 2nd Chinese Music Ethnographic Film Festival & International Music Ethnographic Film Exhibition (Biennial Festival)
Circular No. 1
Ethnographic films have performed a significant role in academic discourse and dissemination of traditional culture since the early 20th century. Prompted by anthropologists, ethnologists and sociologists in Britain, France, Australia, Russia and the United States in the 1920s, documentaries came to be an effective means of rendering ethnographic data from fieldwork and that brought about the notion of “music ethnographic film”.
Music ethnographic film, as one of the effective approaches in current music study for preserving, illustrating and studying music behavior and process, facilitates not only a better understanding of music in its cultural context, but also the historical encounter of art and musicology.
Given the importance of music ethnographic film in academic research, and with the support from music institutions around the world, Shanghai Conservatory of Music hosted the “1st Chinese Music Ethnographic Film Festival & International Music Ethnographic Film Exhibition” in between August and November in 2019. Serving as a professional platform for young ethnomusicologists and filmmakers, the festival aims to enlighten their creativity and career in the field.
The 2019 event received 62 submissions which included works based on music-oriented fieldwork performed in various regions. The dynamics of shifting relationships among music, culture and icons are depicted through the process of primary evaluation of works, screening of selected films, online interactions and thematic commentaries. In attempting to narrate how arts anchor to popular culture and city construction, the film week held at Shanghai Grand Theatre in August features not only worldwide classics of music ethnographies, but also offers the floor to participants and brings them into conversations with adjudicators and the general public. The 1st Chinese Music Ethnographic Film Festival & International Music Ethnographic Film Exhibition is considered to be an academic milestone where multi-disciplines, i.e., music ethnographies, ethnomusicology and film and theatre, engaged in an unprecedented orientation.
This biennial festival will return in 2021 and will be organized by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, with the help from the Chinese National Museum of Ethnology, the Special Committee on Ethnographic Films and Visual Anthropology of China Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (CUAES), Yangtze River Delta Region Music Education and Art Industry Development Alliance, He Luting Advanced Research Institute of Chinese Music and Asia-Europe Music Research Centre of SHCM.
The films entering the semi-finals will be toured by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. The event organizing committee has an academic committee and a jury; the jury has committees for preliminary evaluation and re-evaluation, which is mainly composed of senior experts and scholars in ethnomusicology, visual anthropology, film studies, and related disciplines from home and abroad.
