近年来,ICTM(国际传统音乐学会)、CHIME(欧洲中国音乐研究基金/“磬”)等重要的国际音乐学术年会或学术研讨会都设有“影展”专场,并有中国学者的作品展映。

1st Chinese Music Ethnographic Film Festival & International Music Ethnographic Film Exhibition
Circular No. 1

March8, 2019

Ethnographic films have performed a significant role in academic discourse and dissemination of traditional culture since the early 19th century. Prompted by anthropologists, ethnologists and sociologists in Britain, France, Australia, Russia and the United States in the 1920s, documentaries came to be an effective means of rendering ethnographic data from fieldwork and that brought about the notion of “music ethnographic film”.

Music ethnographic film, as a one of the effective approaches in current music study for preserving, illustrating and studying music behavior and process, facilitates not only a better understanding of music in its cultural context, but also the historical encounter of art and musicology.
Scholarly societies in the world, for instance, ICTM (International Council for Traditional Music), CHIME (European Foundation for Chinese Music Research), etc., have underlined the value of music ethnographic film in the recent years with the inclusion of film sections in annual meetings. Music academia in China echoed the idea in various forms on several annual conferences of the China Traditional Music Association (Nanjing, 2010; Hohhot, 2016; Shenyang, 2018). The increasing employment of ethnographic films into local music research negotiates how music ethnographic film enables boundary cross of multi-disciplines and nations, which enhances musical heritage transmission.

Given the importance of music ethnographic film in academic research, and with the support from music institutions around the world, Shanghai Conservatory of Music is honored to host “1st Chinese Music Ethnographic Film Festival & International Music Ethnographic Film Exhibition” in November 2019. Serving as a professional platform for young ethnomusicologists and filmmakers, the festival aims to enlighten their creativity and career in the field. Current agenda of the festival includes, films selection, selected films screening, forums, online interactions, etc. Films which nominated the semi-final will be showcased in Shanghai Grand Theatre.
